In this 13th blog post, I am using an "X-ray" process so I can see the "bones" of my research project argument. At this point, my research project is still a work-in-progress, so this post serves as a part of my revision process.
8. X-ray Summary: I think the bones of my research project is there and I am doing what I need to do but I still need to improve the execution of my work. Our body's have their own immune system to protect against diseases and it does a pretty good job most of the time. It can keep pathogens out and when they get in the body, it can also get rid of them. Although we have our own immune system, vaccinations are still important because there are times wherein certain pathogens are able to overcome the immune system. This can cause serious consequences and can be very harmful to someone's health.
First off, how do vaccinations work? When a pathogen enters the body, it does things the body does not recognize. When a person is vaccinated, the same but weaker and safer type of pathogen is used. There are various types of vaccines, a part of the pathogen (like a leg for humans), a dead or inactivated form, a toxoid which is a chemically modified toxin from the microorganism that is no longer toxic but is still antigenic, and a weakened pathogen The vaccine basically prepares the body and trains it to fight a certain pathogen. Think of it like boxing training or sparing which prepares you for the real fight in the ring. The body cannot be prepared for types of serious diseases if it has never been exposed. It is very important to get vaccinated because it protects us and herd immunity also exists. This means that if you are vaccinated, you are also doing your part to protect other people who cannot be vaccinated. Examples of those people are very young children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems and pregnant women. Being vaccinated decreases the likelihood of a disease spreading. To learn more about vaccines, visit Healthline In this 11th blog, I will be discussing more about my topic which is anti-vaccination. I have been watching many videos about anti-vaccination and I actually came across a video called Pro-Vaccine vs Anti-Vaccine: Should Your Kids Get Vaccinated? which was made by the Youtube Channel, Jubilee.
I found the video very interesting because it truly was in the middle ground. There was no screaming and shutting the other person out. I learned quite a lot about anti-vaxxers and their views. I do agree that they should never be completely shut out or disrespected because some people are in certain situations wherein vaccines cause them more harm than good. It is important to be compassionate and understanding when it comes to some cases. I am pro-vaccine but it is also important to take into consideration that some people have experienced adverse effects. Something I will never agree on tho is being anti-vaccination and telling other people to be anti-vax as well due to one negative personal experience. It is not safe nor wise because there is still statistical evidence that shows how the benefits greatly outweigh the risk of adverse effects. It is unfortunate that these people have experienced these things but it should never be the sole reason to not vaccinate children. When there is an adverse effect, doctors investigate it. They also investigate past experiences before administering vaccines. If, for some reason, a child cannot receive any vaccination, they fall into a population that must be protected by herd immunity. Herd immunity, according to Oxford Dictionary, is defined as "the resistance to the spread of a contagious disease within a population that results if a sufficiently high proportion of individuals are immune to the disease, especially through vaccination." "Parents know their children best" I absolutely disagree with this statement because the closer you are to a patient, the more biased you become thus clouding your judgement. It is difficult to create an objective decision. My mom who works in Mercy Philadelphia Hospital talks about this a lot. This is why she works with older patients and not children because parents tend to be overprotective and disagree even when it is a already a doctor telling them what the issue is and what to do. People in the medical community are also strongly discouraged to work with their family members as a doctor because of this very reason. Hello everyone! For this 10th blog assignment I will be discussing my research project while exploring the American Zeitgeist. According to Merriam-Webster a zeitgeist is “the general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era."
Hello everyone! For this 9th blog assignment, I will be using found poetry and blackout poetry to interpret and reflect on the 4 texts I have linked down below. Both found poetry and blackout poetry are made from existing texts. Words or phrases can be rearranged, reordered or shown as poems in found poetry. For blackout poetry, a person takes a black marker to cross out words or phrases, as if censoring them, to keep the ones that will form their poem.
I would also like to say that in working with these texts related to discourse communities, I worked with my classmates from my English Composition I class, Javon Lindsey-Terrell and Tai Mai. Working on these poems, we learned that there are many descriptions in these texts such as being connected and sharing history that can be seen within our classroom. I really enjoyed making these because I personally think there is something visually appealing about them. We tried our best to keep the essence of these texts although removing many words from the original work. Hope you enjoy! In this blog assignment I will be reflecting on the well-being of my digital portfolio.
I think my home page is flourishing since I have met all the criteria for the header image, quote, introduction and goals. My about page is also flourishing because I have the header image, quote, a photo of beautiful photo of myself, an author bio and a link to my Proust Questionnaire. I have recently added all the links which I had previously forgotten. My contact page is flourishing My Narrative Project page is sustaining thus still needs to be worked on. I would like to finish this page by the end of this week after I submit a print out of my final work to my professor, Sabatino Mangini, for him to help me edit it. I will also provide more description to my preface about my past experiences and blog assignments. I have yet to provide links for each one of them. I do not have to worry about my Research Project page since we have not started on it yet. My blog page, which you are currently on, is flourishing but I do plan on making at least 2 bonus blogs before the end of this week. For my Midterm Reflection, I was asked to create a vlog which you can access by clicking on this link to my Youtube video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UveonAgDqRQ
In this video, I will be answering 4 questions:
Hello everyone and welcome back! In this fifth blog assignment, we watched 3 videos, which I have linked down below, from the Wizard of Oz. For this blog post, I will be answering 5 questions about how narrative writing affects the heart, mind and nerve, how we have agency in our writing and what I believe shapes a persons sense of identity. I will be sharing my own perceptions based on my personal experiences.
Hello everyone and welcome back! In this blog assignment, we were asked to read Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway. It was about a couple on a train station arguing about whether or not they should have an abortion. In reading the story, we learned about motifs, symbols and how to write with some dialogue. I also felt many emotions and the two that I was able to relate to the most was discomfort and uncertainty. In this blog, I am going to write about the day I left the Philippines and how I was very unprepared for that moment. “Watch the house.” “What about it?” I asked my little brother. “It’s going to get smaller and smaller until you can’t see it.” My two brothers and I stuck our heads onto the car window. “Goodbye truck” “Goodbye house” “Goodbye Grandpa” We started naming a lot of the things and people we were leaving behind. We winced as the house got smaller. Finally my father took the slight turn which made the house vanish. My brothers and I screamed as we realized that that was the last time we would see the house. It felt like a sin to have the image fade slowly in our minds but there was nothing we could do to control it. I do still remember the dirty bricks with the vines growing over them, the rusty red gates with peeling paint and the dark brown soil which surrounded the front of the house. The place wasn't well taken care of but it was home. The car ride lasted for a couple hours. It may be a small country but due to how the roads were constructed and the heavy population, traffic was horrible. It was odd to see both my parents in the car together since they’ve been divorced for a very long time but my brothers and I were thankful that everything seems to be just fine and that our father was with us. The clouds began to darken and that made sense since it was late May, the rainy season of the Philippines was on its way. When we arrived at the airport, it started pouring. The front was packed with so many people and cars that I could not even see the entrance. “I’ll just drop you off here” said my dad. Our youngest sibling panicked, “No! You’re leaving this soon? I thought you were coming with us, please don’t leave.” “Don’t worry, I'm coming in,” my dad laughed, “I just have to find a good parking spot and we need to drop off a lot of luggage.” All of us kids were relieved as we were all thinking the same thing. We took our bags and got soaked in the cold rain. We waited for him inside at a 7 Eleven store. My dad arrived and we decided to eat together. This was also going to be one of those "last times." “Bhrodyne, sit here with daddy, I’ll take pictures of you two.” My dad wrapped his arms around my brother tightly and tickled him until he was screaming. “When you come back, you’re going to be such a big boy!” Bhrodyne giggled, “Yeah and I’ll finally get my 1 on 1 and beat you up!” “You wish.” “No way, you won’t be able to handle all my strength, not even 50 percent of it.” The scrawny little boy boasted. “Oh, you really think so?” He started tickling him again and even put him in a head lock until he yelled, "Tap, tap, tap!” We hung out for an hour or 2 in the 7 Eleven until it was time to go. My father turned to me, “Maxyne, you know what, we don’t really have to worry, I don’t want you and the boys to be sad. When we talk again, it will be as if we just saw each other yesterday. This is nothing.” I agreed and I knew this to be true because my dad would usually disappear for weeks at a time but whenever he came back, everything was always back to normal like nothing ever happened. As we were boarding our luggage onto the plane, my friend messages me, “Hey, do not board your guitar on the plane because they’ll toss it and you’ll have to buy a brand new one. It happened to me twice.” I told my mom that I had to give my guitar back to my dad and she let me. I ran as fast as I could, jumped over big carts, went through bags and crowds to get to my dad before he left. This was my first ever electric guitar which my father gave to me when I was 13, a black Gibson Les Paul. I didn't want to give it back because it was one of the only few things I had that reminded me of him. He saw me and I explained to him they’d snap my guitar’s neck and that I already had a hand carry. He took my guitar which was wrapped in a black fabric case and put it around his shoulder. I hugged him tightly, holding back all of my tears. We said our goodbyes and I love yous. I walked backwards and gave one final wave. The words of my brother echoed in the back of my mind: “Smaller and smaller until you can’t see it.” I watched him until he was swallowed by the crowed of people. Through the tight exit and big glass windows, the clouds were still dark outside, contrasting the bright white walls of the airport. |
